Texas officials promote seat belt safety campaign through end of month

  • May 27, 2026

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The Texas Department of Transportation, along with city leaders and partner agencies, promoted seat belt safety through demonstrations, personal testimonies and education.

The campaign runs through the end of the month. Officials said the message goes beyond enforcement, reminding Texans that a seat belt can be the difference between life and death.

TxDOT pointed to hundreds of deaths each year that could have been prevented by buckling up.

“965 lives were lost in Texas roads, that’s a state stat, because people were not wearing their seat belts,” Blanca Trevino-Castro said.

Officials stressed that buckling up is required by law for every rider, day and night. Children must be in a car seat depending on their age, weight and height.

A seat belt violation can result in fines of up to $200. Drivers can also face fines of up to $250 plus court costs if children are not properly secured.
