HOUSTON – West Virginia jumped out to a 14-0 lead and took advantage of four turnovers to take a 45- 35 win over the #22/22 University of Houston Football team inside TDECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers grabbed a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter on quarterback Scotty Fox Jr.’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Cam Vaughn with 12:54 left.

However, the Cougars rallied and used a 1-yard touchdown score from junior quarterback Conner Weigman and the quarterback’s 9-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Amare Thomas to tie the game at 21-21 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

Unfortunately, the Mountaineers outscored Houston 24-14 in the second half to take the win.

Weigman threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another score but was picked off twice.

Thomas was Weigman’s leading target through the air, hauling in 10 catches for 99 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back Dean Connors accounted for 71 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Following a Houston turnover on its first possession of the second half, West Virginia took over in Cougar territory. However, the Mountaineers could only move 15 yards before Kade Hensley’s 50-yard field goal gave them a 24-21 lead with 12:19 left in the third quarter.

Jordan Scruggs gave West Virginia a 31-21 lead after intercepting a Houston pass and running 80 yards into the end zone with 6:45 left in the third quarter.

The Cougars rallied and used a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by Weigman’s 8-yard touchdown strike to Thomas for their second scoring connection of the game to move within 31-28 with 1:16 left in the third quarter.

Fox’s 34-yard touchdown up the middle pushed West Virginia’s lead back to double digits early in the third quarter, and Diore Hubbard’s 11-yard touchdown midway through the final period gave the Mountaineers a 45-28 lead.

The Cougars closed to within 45-35 when  Weigman and Thomas connected through the air for the third tie, but that would be as close as Houston would get the rest of the way.

Hubbard rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries to lead the Mountaineers.
