EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Drivers tempted to use dirt or emergency shoulders to get around traffic could face more than frustration on the road, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said this is a growing problem.

“We are seeing more violations of people driving on the shoulder or maybe cutting across property, you know, through businesses to get from one roadway to another,” a sheriff’s office sergeant said.

Officials said paved or improved shoulders can only be used in specific situations, including stopping during an emergency, avoiding a collision, or allowing another vehicle to pass.

Deputies also warned that improper shoulder use can be dangerous, especially for first responders.

“[In an] emergency, if a citizen has an emergency vehicle behind them, then they must pull over to the right shoulder, must make a complete stop and let that emergency vehicle pass through and then they could go ahead and proceed back onto the highway,” the sergeant said.

Drivers caught using the shoulder illegally can face fines of around $200, plus court costs, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies urged drivers to stay patient, even during frustrating delays.
