FIFA World Cup fever is beginning to sweep across every corner of Dallas-Fort Worth. From newly unveiled murals to immersive fan spaces, the global tournament’s influence is already leaving its mark on North Texas, including the local arts scene.
On June 5 and 6, Opera Arlington will present a reimagined, soccer-inspired production of Bizet’s Carmen, blending the passion of opera with the energy of the world’s most popular sport.
Dedicated to showcasing emerging talent from across North Texas, Opera Arlington was founded in 2022 by Eliza Escalante and Bree Nichols. It provides rising artists with valuable performance opportunities and professional experience.
“When we were discussing the upcoming season, we were discussing the potential of putting Carmen on our season, which is one of the most programmed operas in the world,” said Escalante, co-founder and general director of Opera Arlington. “When we realized the World Cup playoffs would be happening right here in our city, it seemed like a no-brainer to try and incorporate this highly exciting and charismatic and historic event into our production.”
Opera Arlington’s version of Carmen will be sung in French but will have English subtitles. It will take place in 1920s Spain, when the nation is celebrating its national soccer team participating in the 1920 Summer Olympics.
Carmen follows the love triangle between Carmen and her two loves: Don Jose, a soldier, and Escamillo, who is traditionally portrayed as a superstar bullfighter. In this version, Escamillo is a charismatic soccer player and icon.
The production will be two and a half hours long, and both nights will have different actors playing the main characters. The Mansfield Philharmonic will be playing alongside the actors.
“I think people should come and check out this opera because it is one of the icons of the repertoire,” Escalante said. “I guarantee you’re going to recognize music and themes from the show itself.
