EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A well-known ring announcer who has worked major boxing events for Netflix, Sky Sports and ESPN is set to be in El Paso this weekend to call a rematch billed as “Han versus Holm.”

Kody Mo Mommaerts, who also goes by “Big Mo,” said he will serve as the ring announcer for the fight card Saturday in El Paso.

Mommaerts said he has announced several high-profile bouts, including “Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson,” “Amanda Serrano, Katie Taylor,” and other events he said aired on Netflix.

He said he previously worked “a lot on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom” and is “now working for ESPN.”

Mommaerts said his favorite events are the ones with big crowds and strong local energy, and he pointed to Saturday’s matchup as an example because it features a regional rivalry.

He said the card includes “one woman from right here in El Paso” and “one woman out of Albuquerque,” adding that the local passion is part of why “the event is selling so well on Saturday” and why he thinks it will be “a really successful event for El Paso.”

Mommaerts also described how he got into ring announcing, saying it started with public speaking skills he learned early in life.

“I was taught how to public speak at a young age by my father,” Mommaerts said, adding that his father “was a trial attorney for a long time” who taught him “the importance of public speaking and presentation and authority.”

Mommaerts said he first worked as a combat sports commentator before deciding to try ring announcing in his early 20s.

“Started at like 23 or 24 years old,” he said, adding that he had to build experience through smaller shows because promoters were hesitant to hire “a 24-year-old kid with no experience.”

He said a turning point came after he announced an international event in Dubai following COVID-19 restrictions, which helped him get noticed by Sky Sports and led to more work across Europe before returning to the U.S. for larger events.

During the interview, Mommaerts also gave a sample introduction for fighter Stephanie Hahn, describing her as “representing the El Paso Police Department,” a “beauty pageant winner,” and “the defending world champion,” before announcing her as “the enforcer, Stephanie Han.”
