LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A new data center is now open in Central Lubbock. The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on the facilities near 19th and Avenue Q this morning.
The two Duos Edge AI facilities are million dollar “edge” facilities – which means they are small, decentralized computing centers.
“They’re built to be exactly the same. The security, the infrastructure, it’s all built to be the same as a large data center,” Bill Radford, Duos Edge AI’s Vice President of Technology, said. “From a footprint perspective, it’s designed to be as non-impactful to the community as possible.”
Radford said the facility doesn’t need any water. Instead, it’s cooled by air conditioning.
“We have zero water usage policy, so there’s no water meter, there’s no pipes, there’s nothing,” Radford said. “The air conditioners on the end are like the air conditioners in your home. They’re just more higher powered. They don’t use water for cooling towers or anything. In fact, when they’re running and they’re pulling humidity out of air, we’re technically generating water right out of thin air.”
Radford said the facility also doesn’t require much energy. The max capacity is 200 kilowatts, Radford said that’s about the same a McDonald’s uses.
He added that Duos tries to connect as close to the power grid as possible, to avoid burdening its neighbors with energy costs.
“That’s the part that most of the communities are concerned about the most: that cost ends up getting split among everybody instead of just the [data center],” Radford said. “So, for us, we try and get close to the power grid itself as close as we can because we like to pay for it.”
Inside the building, there are 15 cabinets available for companies and organizations to rent. Duos leases the land from Lubbock ISD and offered free space to area school districts.
Customers and phone companies bring their own equipment to place in the cabinets.
“Our model is space power and cross-connects,” Radford said. “That means we give them the cabinet to put their equipment in, we give them conditioned power to put their equipment in, and we connect them to the local phone company in the building so that they get their fast connection. That’s our entire business model.”
Radford said Lubbock expressed the most interest of all the cities in Texas.
Duos Edge AI has opened facilities in Corpus Christi, Victoria, Amarillo and Waco. The company has three more open houses scheduled in June and two more in July, all in Texas. The company also has plans to expand into Georgia, starting in Savannah.
Radford says it’s the company’s goal to be good stewards of local resources.
“It was just part of our mantra from the very beginning,” Radford said. “Just do no harm, you know, and try and do the best we can to bring benefit to the community.”
