Texans who purchased and used an Android device, including Samsung Galaxy devices, could be eligible for some settlement cash soon. The settlement comes after a class-action lawsuit was filed against Google, alleging that it collects users’ information and uses their cellular data without their knowledge.
Individuals who were impacted may get a share of the $135 million payout. Before that happens, there are several important deadlines Texans should note.
The deadline to write an objection to the court regarding the terms and planned awards of the settlement is Friday, May 29. This is also your last chance to exclude yourself from being involved, which means you won’t receive any funds or benefits that may be owed to you.
The settlement is the result of a class action lawsuit filed by a group of plaintiffs in 2022, according to court records. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, they claim Google’s operating system leads Android mobile devices to transfer information to Google, consuming a user’s cellular data, without their permission. It allegedly even occurs when “devices are in a completely idle state, meaning they are not in use or being touched, with all apps closed,” per the settlement website.
The Court has scheduled a Final Approval Hearing, in which a judge will determine if the $135 settlement terms are fair and reasonable, on June 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Objects submitted by the Friday deadline will also be read aloud.
Members of the Settlement Class are U.S. citizens who used a mobile device running the Android operating system to access the internet via cellular data networks between November 12, 2017, and the date the settlement receives final approval (possibly next month), according to the proposed legal agreement.
Folks who are approved are currently slated to receive an amount under $100 each, court documents cite. That number could change as discussions continue, and the settlement administrator is trying to work out a deal in which every member gets the same amount.
