For most high school seniors, graduation week is filled with celebrations, family gatherings and final goodbyes. For Corpus Christi native Adrian Guerra, it also included a trip to San Antonio to watch his favorite team fight to keep its season alive.

Just two days before receiving his diploma from Foy H. Moody High School, Guerra and his mother, Mayra, made the roughly 140-mile drive to the Frost Bank Center for Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.

For Guerra, the trip marked his first Spurs game and a chance to celebrate a major life milestone alongside family members who live in the San Antonio area.

“It feels like two wins in one month,” Guerra said. “It really does…”It can’t really get any better,

The soon-to-be graduate said arriving in San Antonio and seeing family while preparing for graduation has made the week even more special.

Guerra said the support system around him, especially his mother, helped make the experience possible.

“All of my family matters first, but the one I really owe it to is my mother,” he said. “She’s really here to support me through everything and stuck with me through it all. She really made everything far better for me to be here.”

As he prepares to receive his diploma, Guerra said graduation represents both an accomplishment and a reminder that even more hard work lies ahead.

“It shows that I have to put in more determination and hard work because of what’s coming in the future,” he said.

While Guerra said he is still figuring out exactly what comes next after high school, he remains confident about his future.

Before graduation festivities begin back home in Corpus Christi, Guerra was hoping for one more celebration in San Antonio.

After the Spurs’ Game 5 loss in Oklahoma City, Guerra predicted San Antonio would respond in front of its home crowd and force a decisive Game 7.
“We’re going to win,” he said. “Two wins in one week… Let’s do it.”

His confidence was rewarded as the Spurs extended their season and forced a winner-take-all Game 7 in Oklahoma City.
