A Plainview Bulldogs football player has signed with Wayland Baptist University, continuing his football career at the college level.
Chambers signed with Wayland Baptist on April 23. The university, located in Plainview, Texas, competes in the NAIA’s Sooner Athletic Conference, which includes schools such as Texas Wesleyan, Oklahoma Panhandle State University and Ottawa University.
A two-year varsity running back, Chambers put together a strong senior season for Plainview, finishing with 555 rushing yards on 102 carries, good for 5.4 yards per carry and 111.0 rushing yards per game. In only five games, he ranked 10th in the district in total rushing yards and his yards-per-game average appears to have placed him second in the district, showing how effective he was when on the field.
Plainview High School football coach Wyatt Martinez said Chambers was a great player and person. He remained a close part of the team after an injury ended his season early, and Chambers was made an honorary captain for the remainder of the season.
“I am so thankful he’s getting the opportunity to play again at Wayland and still get to play games at Bulldog Stadium,” Martinez said.
By signing with Wayland Baptist, Chambers is joining a competitive program. Wayland Baptist went 4-6 last season, losing three games by two points or fewer and averaging 34.5 points per game. Chambers’ high school production and experience as a workhorse running back should give him a strong foundation as he adjusts to the college level.
