The Texas Department of Transportation continues to play with the hearts and schedules of weekend drivers. In the latest update, the agency is all but shutting down the Loop 1604 and I-10 intersection this weekend on one busy side of town. Coupled with some long-term closures near downtown, your Spurs playoff game shenanigans might be delayed.

Anyone hoping for a quick trip to these shopping destinations may want to rethink their plans. And if you’re heading downtown to watch the Spurs game on Saturday, May 30, maybe leave earlier than you’d expect — just in case.

TxDOT is closing the eastbound Loop 1604 ramp at La Cantera Parkway at 9 p.m. Friday, May 29, and it won’t reopen until 5 a.m. Monday, June 1. So, heading home on Loop 1604 East after hitting the shops means taking the access road for several miles through the interchange and hopping on Texas’ biggest loop after I-10.

But that’s coupled with another major weekend closure. The entire intersection of Loop 1604 and I-10 access roads will be shut down until 5 p.m. Saturday. Plus, the eastbound lanes of I-10 (heading into town) are shutting down at this time, and the westbound lanes heading toward Boerne will be down to one lane — a major headache, as traffic is already constantly bottlenecked in this area, with traffic flanking either side of the interstate.

Basically, TxDOT is nearly shutting down the intersection this weekend, with only drivers crossing on the main lanes of Loop 1604 bypassing these detours. It means a lot of access road detours and turnarounds for everyone else.

If the crawling traffic and detours on the Northside don’t hinder you from heading into the city as the Spurs’ playoff fate is sealed on Saturday, some I-10 shutdowns closer to the action might. TxDOT has the upper level of I-10 heading west away from town at a near standstill, shutting down all but one lane as a long-term bridge joint repair project continues.

Traffic bottlenecks where I-10 splits from I-37, heading north, meaning cars are barely creeping up the highway at pretty much any time of day. For those heading back home post-game watch party, this could spell a very late-night ETA on Saturday.
