Adan Martinez charged after officer shot during struggle on Airline Road

Police say 26-year-old Adan Martinez was arrested after an officer was shot during a struggle on Airline Road. Injuries were non-life-threatening.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Adan Martinez, 26, has been charged after a Corpus Christi police officer was shot during a struggle with police on Airline Road.

Martinez was transported to the City Detention Center for booking and faces charges of aggravated assault against a peace officer and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.

Police say the officer who was shot during the incident was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported.

According to Corpus Christi Police, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Airline Road around 3:38 p.m. in reference to a threat-in-progress call. Additional information provided to dispatch indicated a customer inside a business was threatening other individuals at the location.

When officers arrived, they made contact with Martinez inside the business and attempted to speak with him. Authorities say after some dialogue, Martinez refused to cooperate and attempted to flee by running out of the store.

Officers pursued Martinez into the parking lot where a struggle began as they attempted to detain him. During the altercation, police say officers were attempting to gain control of Martinez’s hands when a firearm he was concealing discharged.

One officer was struck by the round during the struggle before Martinez was taken into custody.

Investigators say there were no other injuries sustained during the incident.

Roads surrounding the scene were temporarily blocked off as officers processed evidence and continued investigating what led up to the encounter.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
