Readers selected the county-owned beach park located at the southernmost tip of South Padre Island in the Rio Grande Valley as the best beach in Texas as part of USA Today’s 2026 10Best readers’ choice poll. It was the only beach in the Rio Grande Valley to make it to the top 10 after another well-known surfside spot, Boca Chica Beach — which has gained broader notoriety for its proximity to SpaceX’s Starship launch site — failed to advance in this year’s voting. It’s the second year in a row that Boca Chica didn’t make the cut. However, there are plenty of reasons why Isla Blanca rose to the top once again.
“Isla Blanca Park enchants visitors with its soft white sands, turquoise waters, and vibrant beach culture, offering both relaxation and excitement for beachgoers of all ages,” USA Today officials said.
Cameron County officials consider Isla Blanca the “crown jewel” of the county’s coastal park system. Located at 33174 State Park Road 100, South Padre Island, TX 78598, Isla Blanca spans more than 300 acres and includes an expansive list of public amenities. That includes two large pavilions right on the beach that provide shade and picnic areas, as well as restrooms, for beachgoers, rinse stations, concession and bait stands, and a raised boardwalk that can all be found along a one-mile stretch of sand along the Gulf of Mexico side of the park. Visitors can rent beach umbrellas, cabanas and shelters.
Isla Blanca also offers access to the Laguna Madre, with a public boat ramp for anglers looking to fish the mirror-like waters of the bay, or head offshore for some deep sea fishing. In 2019, officials opened a combination outdoor amphitheater/indoor event center, which has become a popular spot to watch SpaceX Starship launches. Speaking of SpaceX, the south end of Isla Blanca Park faces the Brazos-Santiago Pass, which is the outlet of the Brownsville Ship Channel. During SpaceX launches, crowds flock to the large granite stone jetties that line the ship channel for the best unfettered views as Starships are propelled into space from Starbase about five miles away. Along the jetties, it’s hard to miss the large bronze statute of Jesus Christ with arms outstretched toward the water. Known as the Cristo de los Pescadores, or Christ of the Fishermen, statue, the massive public artwork was installed in memory of two brothers who died while shrimping in the gulf. Today, the statute stands as a perpetual prayer for safety for all those at sea.
For those who are looking for more than a day trip, Isla Blanca Park offers a wide array of camping options, from primitive dry camping to full-service hookups for RVs and fifth wheels perfect for glamping. Currently, however, the Isla Blanca RV Park is undergoing $12 million in infrastructure improvements that will have the majority of its camping options unavailable through at least this fall. But once the improvements are complete, the park will boast more than 600 RV camping sites.
Other attractions located within the park include the South Padre Island station of the U.S. Coast Guard and Beach Water Park, the full-service water park that was previously known as Schlitterbahn South Padre Island. There’s also a marine research lab that’s open to the public called the UTRGV Coastal Studies Lab. With its live marine aquariums and touch tanks, vast shell collection, and various displays of marine animal specimens and skeletons, it’s a great place for families looking to find a little educational fun while on vacation.
