If you went fishing out on a Texas lake, preferably one that isn’t almost empty, and didn’t take a photo of the fish you caught, did you really go fishing at all? Luckily, Texans don’t appear to have that problem, as almost 2 million people have snapped photos of their fishing trips at one of the most popular destinations in the Lone Star State.
Despite severe drought in recent years, Lake Travis in Austin remains a favorite among locals and visitors across Texas. Research from Fishing Points found that Lake Travis has been tagged in 1.9 million Instagram reels, putting it in a tie with Lake George, New York, for the No. 6 “most Instagrammable” fishing destinations for anglers.
Fishing Points examined 129 major North American lakes to see which was the most beautiful. Lake Travis was the only Texas location to make the list.
“Lake Travis’s strong showing reflects the growing visibility of Texas lakes on social media, where anglers are sharing everything from largemouth bass catches to those famous Hill Country sunsets,” Fishing Points co-owner and CEO Klemen Klemencic wrote in the report.
Lake Travis was struggling with drought one year ago, at only 42.2% full, according to Water Data for Texas. The devastating Fourth of July floods helped revive the lake and several other Texas bodies of water. Lake Travis has once again been helped by recent rains in Central Texas, sitting at 79.1% full on Wednesday, May 27, up from its 74.2% level one week prior.
The top five most Instagrammable lakes went to Lake Tahoe (16 million Instagram reels), Lake Norman (3.8 million), Lake Havasu (3.2 million), Lake Michigan (2.9 million) and Lake Ontario (2.1 million).
