Scattered storms through early morning, rain chance increases again late week

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) update 10:59 p.m. – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are slowly moving across parts of the South Plains. Some storms will be in the area next few hours, with a clearing trend by early morning. Then another hot day is in store.

update 10:30 p.m. – The severe warning for Lubbock expired at 10:30. The primary risk from storms now is flooding.

update 9:51 p.m. – There have been a few severe storms around the South Plains this evening.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 10:30 p.m. for Lubbock and much of Lubbock County and eastern Hockley County. The strongest part of this storm could produce 1” hail and 60mph gusts. It will also produce heavy rain.

A flash flood warning is in effect for much of Lubbock and western Lubbock County until Midnight. Through 10:15, more than 1.2” of rain has fallen at the Texas Tech Mesonet site at Reese Center.

A flash flood warning is in effect for Lynn County. Last hour the National Weather Service reported a portion of U.S. 87 was flooded north of Tahoka, at CR19.

Posted Sunday afternoon – Once again, heat and moisture are bringing showers and storms to the South Plains.

Widely scattered thunderstorms will be possible over the new few hours. Thunderstorms may become severe with the potential for hail and strong winds, along with frequent lightning. The darker green area has the greatest chance for marginal severe storms this evening. Most of the storms will move northeast and coverage will decrease later in the evening.

Looking ahead to Monday, continued hot with lower rain chances and temperatures once again in the 90s.

The chance for rain and thunderstorms will increase second half of this week.
