CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M put up 493 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon as they outlasted the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, 53-48 in a Lone Star Conference shootout at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in Canyon.

The game began with the Buffs receiving the kickoff, and C’ing Blanton returned it 74 yards to the Kingsville 26-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, RJ Martinez connected with Sean Johnson for a 26-yard touchdown pass, giving the Buffs an early lead at 14:38. The home team quickly extended their advantage when Ashton Reynolds recovered a fumble by Jack Turner in the end zone, bringing the score to 15-0 with 13:50 remaining.

Later in the period, Martinez showcased his passing ability with a 43-yard touchdown throw to Cristian Dixon, increasing the lead to 22-6 after a Kingsville kickoff return touchdown. Drew Cox added a 29-yard field goal to conclude the scoring for the Buffs in the first quarter. The period ended with the Buffs leading 25-14.

The Buffs maintained a narrow lead for much of the second quarter, with a significant drive culminating in Martinez connecting with Brennan Ray for a 19-yard touchdown pass at 1:59. This score, followed by Drew Cox’s successful extra point, put the Buffs ahead 32-28. Despite Kingsville’s attempts to counter, including a touchdown from Lawrence Starks and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jack Turner to Kevin Holmes Jr., the Buffs secured the victory. The game concluded with the Buffs winning 32-28.

The Buffs made a significant impact late in the third quarter, reclaiming the lead with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Dixon at 3:46 remaining on the clock. This crucial play followed an earlier Kingsville drive that concluded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Starks, giving them a temporary lead. The Buffs’ defense held strong, with Reynolds contributing a notable 13-yard sack, which helped prevent further scoring threats. The period ended with the Buffs leading 39-35. This marked the final score as the game concluded with the Buffs securing a victory.

The Buffs turned the tide in the fourth quarter with a decisive drive, capped by Martinez’s 3-yard touchdown run at 10:55, regaining the lead at 46-42. Jamel Acosta-Lewis then intercepted a pass from Kingsville’s Turner, setting up a 21-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Zach Phipps, extending the lead to 53-42. While Kingsville responded with a touchdown, their failed extra point left them trailing by five. Another interception by Acosta-Lewis with 30 seconds left sealed the victory for the Buffs, ending the game at 53-48.

Martinez completed 30 of 39 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns, adding 48 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Johnson collected 11 receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown, showcasing his receiving ability. Defensively, Acosta-Lewis intercepted two passes, contributing to the team’s defensive efforts. Reynolds recorded five tackles, one sack, and returned a fumble recovery for a 25-yard touchdown, impacting both defense and scoring.

The Buffs hit the road for the final time next weekend as they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas to take on the Mustangs of Midwestern State with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
