Texas softball has won two straight games after dropping its Women’s College World Series opener Thursday to Tennessee, including a dramatic 3-1 win over Nebraska Sunday in an elimination game.
Now, the defending champion Longhorns (49-12), the NCAA Tournament’s second overall seed, get their rematch against Tennessee (49-10) Monday at 11 a.m. for a spot in the best-of-three WCWS championship series later this week. But Texas needs two wins over Tennessee since the Vols have yet to drop a game at the double-elimination WCWS. Tennessee just needs one win to advance.

Tennessee pitcher Erin Nuwer gives up two more hits to Katie Stewart and Vivi Martinez but no more runs. The Vols only have six more outs to get at least three runs if they want to avoid a second game against Texas.
Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez gives up a two-out single to Sophia Knight but continues her masterful performance that includes just two hits and one walk. Just as important, she’s buying time for ace Teagan Kavan, who will likely start a possible game two of this doubleheader.

Erin Nuwer, who started the game for Tennessee, reenters the contest after Texas lights up Sage Mardjetko for six hits and four runs. Tennessee coach Karen Weekly will apparently save ace Karlyn Pickens for the second game of a doubleheader, which is looking more and more likely. Only a Tennessee double play that helps the Vols escape from a one-out, bases-loaded jam keeps the Vols within shouting distance.
Texas slugger Katie Stewart extends her single-season school record for homers to 29 with a shot that gets over the left-field fence, and freshman Hannah Wells adds a 2-run single into center that scores Vivi Martinez and Reese Atwood. The Longhorns’ Smash Sisters are keeping Texas hopes alive against Tennessee.

Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez was working a no-hitter after Bella Faw’s third-inning single was officially changed to an error on Texas 2B Leighann Goode, so the first hit of the game by Tennessee evens the score. Ella Dodge draws a two-out walk, and Gabby Leach drives her in with a triple that trickles down into the right-field corner.
Reese Atwood, the Longhorns’ all-time leader in home runs, hasn’t shown much power in two previous trips to the WCWS, but she jacks her first career home run at the WCWS to give Texas the lead. The Longhorns already have more hits in two innings today (2) against Tennessee’s Sage Mardjetko than they had in four innings Thursday.

Bella Faw gets the first hit for Tennessee even though it could have easily been a third Texas error, this one on 2B Leighann Goode. But Texas pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez strands her at third. Gutierrez has pitched well through the first three innings with two strikeouts and just the one base-runner.
Sage Mardjetko starts the inning in the circle for Tennessee and retires the Longhorns in order. The All-American gave Texas fits in Tennessee’s 6-3 win Thursday by holding the Horns to one hit in four inning.

Back-to-back Texas errors by third baseman Jaycie Nichols and Katie Stewart to lead off the second bring a rare visit to the field by head coach Mike White, and whatever he said works. Nichols snags a sharply hit ball by Makenzie Butt, steps on third and throws to first for an inning-ending double play.
Texas freshman Hannah Wells sends a deep shot all the way to the warning track in center field, but it stays in the part for a long, long out. Kaiah Altmeyer reaches on a throwing error on Tennessee SS Bella Faw and gets to third on a groundout by Ashton Maloney, but Jaycie Nichols grounds out to second. That’s three left on the bags for Texas early.

Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez only needs seven pitches to send the Vols down in order. That’s a good sign for Texas coach Mike White.
Texas gets Katie Stewart and Vivi Martinez on after back-to-back one-out hits, but Reese Atwood and Leighann Goode both fly out. Texas left three on the bags against Tennessee in their first WCWS meeting Thursday, and it left two on after the first inning today.

Tennessee’s Erin Nuwer fires a ball to Kayden Henry, and we’re off in a WCWS semifinal round. The Vols are the designated home team.
In a matchup of starting pitchers that few expected, Texas will go with Citlaly Gutierrez and Tennessee will turn Erin Nuwer. Gutierrez has only thrown four innings at the WCWS, but the senior has plenty of experience with 113 appearances and 357.1 innings pitched in her career. She’s had the lowest workload of her career this season with 73.1 innings but boasts a 9-3 record, a 2.38 ERA and an opponent’s batting average of .229/

Nuwer, a sophomore, may not have the All-American accolades of fellow Vol pitchers Karlyn Pickens and Sage Mardjetko, but she has similar stats with a 15-1 record, a 0.99 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP.. But expect Pickens and Mardjetko to stay ready.
