Galveston County’s gambling legacy, a rich tapestry that includes the Balinese Room, Kemah’s infamous “casino strip” and native son Tilman Fertitta’s recent acquisition of Vegas totem Caesars Entertainment, is hanging by a thread.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday morning that its Organized Crime Task Force had executed multiple search warrants earlier in the day related to the Gold Chest, Pig Pen, Rusty’s, and three other game rooms in La Marque; and another at 24/7 on West Highway 6 in Alvin. The department noted the investigation remains ongoing,and promised it would release information regarding arrests, criminal charges, and evidence to the public as it becomes available.
Two additional warrants were executed in Fort Bend County, the sheriff’s office said: a residence associated with the owner of the Gold Chest and a warehouse authorities believe was used for the machine storage and distribution. Meanwhile, another 12 warrants were carried out at “various financial institutions” as part of the investigation’s financial component, according to the GCSO.
The raids followed similar operations carried out earlier this year in Hitchcock, where Mayor Christopher Armacost was among those arrested; and on Galveston Island, where several locations were hit and a “significant number” of so-called ‘eight-liner’ gaming machines were recovered, police said.
Opting to get ahead of the curve, the town of Kemah—whose cluster of casinos and gambling dens in the mid-1900s was once linked to the pirate Jean Lafitte’s apocryphal lost treasure—voted to ban eight-liner machines in April, even though none had ever been reported within city limits.
“The City of Kemah wants to ensure it has the tools in place to proactively prevent these types of businesses from operating within city limits, rather than having to respond after they become established,” a spokesperson for the city told Chron at the time.
“Enforcement is what happens after there’s a problem,” she added. “This ordinance is about making sure we don’t have one to begin with.”
