The Dallas Mavericks have chosen the site for their planned multi-billion-dollar arena and entertainment district.
The Mavericks on Monday executed option agreements to purchase approximately 104 acres of the 110-acre former site of Valley View Mall, the franchise told The Dallas Morning News in an emailed statement.

Where is Valley View?
The Valley View site is located at the corner of Preston Road and Interstate 635. Moving to Valley View fulfills the team’s goal of remaining in Dallas, as it is between downtown and the suburbs and is within the city’s 450-acre International District.

What the Mavs have said about Valley View
In a statement, the Mavericks said the former Valley View Mall site would give the team the opportunity to “create a vibrant mixed-use destination.” Along with the arena, the area would have restaurants, entertainment options, public green spaces and family-friendly experiences.
“The Valley View site meets most of the criteria established at the outset of our evaluation process,” the Mavericks said in a statement to The News. “It is our goal to stay in the City of Dallas and this is our best option to do so.”
Why Valley View instead of downtown Dallas?
The Mavericks’ move to Valley View is a lethal blow to city and business leaders’ yearlong efforts to woo the project for downtown, potentially on the current site of City Hall.

The move upends the franchise from its 46-year epicenter, relocating 13 miles to the north. From urban to near-suburbia.
“We have appreciated the enthusiasm from the Dallas city manager, elected officials and greater community to keep the team in Dallas,” the Mavericks said in the statement. “We look forward to continuing the collaboration toward that goal.”
The Mavericks were seeking at least a 50-acre footprint for the project, the centerpiece being a basketball-specific arena to be completed by the time its American Airlines Center lease expires on July 28, 2031.
That timeline was a significant factor in Monday’s decision, multiple people familiar with the negotiating process told The News.
The Mavericks already had pushed their site selection deadline from the end of 2025 to the first quarter of 2026 to an “absolute” July 1 cutoff. The Valley View purchase agreements were executed 29 days before that deadline.

The only viable downtown option pitched to the Mavericks encompassed the land that includes City Hall. However, multiple people close to Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont say he grew increasingly leery of becoming the face of a tear-down-City Hall movement, especially since it wasn’t the Mavericks’ idea in the first place.
When could the Mavs move to Valley View?
The American Airlines Center lease expires on July 28, 2031. The Mavericks could debut in their new arena as early as the 2031-32 season.
