LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – An Air Force veteran received a mortgage-free home Monday in west Lubbock in honor of his service.
West Texas Hero Homes cut the ribbon on the Greenberg family home Monday afternoon. Staff Sgt. Phillip Jason Greenberg is an Air Force veteran who enlisted in 2005 and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan multiple times.
Greenberg served for six years as a vehicle operations journeyman, supporting Army units. He took part in high-risk convoy missions and supported provincial reconstruction teams that worked to build infrastructure such as roads, schools and agricultural projects.
During his second combat tour, Iraqi insurgents attacked his convoy near Baghdad while his unit was delivering supplies. His courage under fire that day earned him the Air Force Combat Action Medal, among other recognitions.
His military honors include the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with service star, Iraq Campaign Medal with service star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service Medal, and NATO Medal.
Greenberg sustained lasting injuries during his service, including severe ankle deterioration, spinal damage and shoulder injuries. He also lives with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his deployments.
The home is designed to help with his physical abilities and support his family. Greenberg and his wife, Autum, will live in the new home.
West Texas Hero Homes is a nonprofit organization that provides mortgage-free homes for military and first responder families in Lubbock. The organization built the home in collaboration with members of the West Texas Home Builders Association.
