It’s no secret that Texas is a standout state, and according to a new study from personal finance platform Wallethub, it’s got yet another reason to shine.
The study rated and ranked over 180 American cities to determine the best places to raise a family. Researchers used five key dimensions to establish the rankings, including family fun, health and safety, education and child care, as well as affordability and socioeconomics.
Researchers determined that out of 182 analyzed cities, Plano is the fourth-best place in America to raise a family. Located just over 20 miles from Dallas, Plano earned a 67.98 overall score.
That’s 18 places higher than Austin, the capital of Texas, which lost points when it came to health and safety, affordability and socioeconomics.

Although Plano landed in 95th place when it came to family fun and 30th for education and child care, it ranked high for health and safety, affordability and socioeconomics – landing in fourth, sixth and second place, respectively.
According to Wallethub analyst Chip Lupo, finding the best place to raise a family in America is a careful balance between “an affordable cost of living with good educational opportunities, safety and enough recreation to keep kids entertained.”
Additionally, “people also often want to raise their children close to their extended family,” Lupo added. “Therefore, current or prospective parents can benefit from narrowing down their choices to a few of the best cities that are within a reasonable drive of their family.”
