Houston’s housing authority, Housing Alliance HTX, released new details Monday about the public housing waitlists that will open later this month. The last time public housing waitlists opened was in 2023.

The following eight properties will take applications from June 22 to July 6. Those interested can apply for up to three locations:

Bellerive (reserved for residents at least 62 years old)

Lyerly (reserved for residents at least 62 years old)

Already on a waitlist?

Those already on a waitlist do not need to take any further action to maintain their spots.

New application?

The applications will be managed through Housing Alliance HTX’s RentCafe portal. The alliance recommended creating an account before applications open and making sure you can log in.

FUTURE OF PUBLIC HOUSING: Houston Housing Authority phasing out public housing, long starved for funds, in shift to vouchers

“Early account setup in RentCafe is strongly recommended because it give applicants time to resolve any access issues before the application window opens,” said Kelly Haines, the authority’s senior vice president for asset management, in a press release. She said Housing Alliance HTX would be able to assist applicant by phone (713-260-0500) or in person at the office during the application period.

Once applications are submitted, there will be a lottery to see who will be added to the waitlists.

Currently on the Housing Choice Voucher waitlist?

Housing Choice Vouchers can be used to subsidize rents for any apartment whose landlord will accept the subsidy. The Housing Choice Voucher waitlist is not opening at this time. But the 2,500 households already on the Housing Choice Voucher waitlist can choose to also join a public housing waitlist.

Those waiting for a Housing Choice Voucher who ask to be added to a public housing waitlist will be added automatically, without going through a lottery.

To crosslist on a public housing waitlist, look out for an email with the required consent form, which will have to be completed and returned.
