Global electronics giant Samsung is moving its U.S. headquarters from New Jersey to Texas later this year; news which comes less than a year after Samsung opened its gleaming HQ in Englewood Cliffs, a spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.
The soon-to-be-former 312,000-square-foot Englewood Cliffs HQ is the home of 1,200 employees and features a cafeteria, fitness center, grocery store and even an arcade.
“Samsung Electronics America Inc. is undergoing a business transformation designed to better position our organization for long-term growth and future success,” reads a statement emailed by Samsung spokesperson Chris Langlois.
The transition will be completed by the end of 2026, the statement from Langlois reads.
“As part of this effort, we are relocating our U.S. headquarters from New Jersey to our existing campus in Plano, Texas,” he continued.
Samsung’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing, research and development is based in Austin, while the business office for its mobile and network operations is based in the city of Plano.
The news was first reported by South Korean newspaper Yonhap News Agency.
“We recognize such adjustments will have an impact on our people and we will be providing support to those affected,” Langlois continued.
Critics of New Jersey’s government said the announcement was the result of what they’ve characterized as an anti-business climate in New Jersey.
“These are not accidents, nor are they coincidences,” said Michele Siekerka, president of the lobbying group the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. “We must take heed of the loss of these large job creators and avoid damaging policies.”
The Samsung office at 700 Sylvan Ave. in Englewood Cliffs was previously occupied by consumer goods company Unilever, which moved its own HQ to Hoboken on the Hudson River last year.
Representatives for Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s office did not immediately return emails Tuesday morning seeking comment.
“Texas didn’t win Samsung by accident,” New Jersey Assemblyman John Azzariti, R-Bergen, said in a Monday evening statement.. “They won because they have spent years creating an environment where businesses want to invest, grow and create jobs.”

“Meanwhile, New Jersey continues to raise costs, add regulations and send the message that employers are little more than a revenue source for government.”
According to the Texas Economic Development Corporation, hundreds of corporations have relocated to Texas, citing its “pro-business climate” and “young and growing workforce.”
ExxonMobil previously moved its legal address from New Jersey to Texas, while other large corporations have included Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX.
