AUSTIN (KXAN) – Texas is awarding more than $40 million in grants to support veterans and their families, state officials announced Tuesday.
Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Veterans Commission said $40.8 million in funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants will be distributed through 190 grants to 160 organizations statewide.
Officials said the funding is expected to serve more than 125,000 veterans, dependents and surviving spouses across Texas.
“Texas is proud to provide crucial services to support the brave men and women who selflessly served our nation in uniform,” Abbott said in a statement.
The grants will fund a wide range of services, including clinical counseling, housing and financial assistance, food services, legal aid and transportation. Programs supporting mental health, service dogs, veteran treatment courts and job training are also included.
TVC Chairwoman Laura Koerner said the impact of the funding will be significant for communities across the state.
“These grants support a range of services, from clinical counseling to housing and financial assistance to legal aid,” Koerner said.
Funding comes primarily from Texas Lottery proceeds designated for veteran support, along with donations tied to licenses, registrations and outdoor recreation permits.
Since 2009, the program has awarded more than $400 million in grants through nearly 1,800 awards, according to the state.
