The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings and weather advisories north and west of Houston Tuesday afternoon, starting around the same time the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

After a storm warning in Hempstead northwest of Houston, the NWS also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Texas cities Huntsville, Madisonville, Trinity and surrounding areas until 6:15 p.m.

The FAA said departing flights were grounded at IAH 3:43 p.m. to 5 p.m. because of the storms.

Special weather statements were also issued in the Fort Bend and Sugar Land area advising of possible pea-sized hail and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. That advisory was set to expire at 5:30 p.m.

The start of meteorological summer arrived Monday as temperatures in the city are expected to climb toward 100 degrees this week. Justin Ballard, meteorologist for the Houston Chronicle, said storm chances are expected to increase across Southeast Texas as heat and humidity build.
