TYLER, Texas — Two East Texas parks received funding to expand trails through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Recreational Trails Grants Program.

The Park of East Texas, Inc., which hosts the East Texas State Fair in Tyler in the fall, was given $300,000 for its trails. The funding will go toward construction of a 1-mile, 6-foot-wide looped decomposed granite trail with a gravel parking lot, trailhead, signage, site furniture and entry gate. The park is located at 204 Patton Lane in Tyler.

The Gun Barrel City Park Trails will be refreshed with the renovation of the 0.95-mile, 5-foot-wide recycled asphalt trail. Gun Barrel City received $54,700 for the project.

Overall, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved over $6.17 million in grants in May to fund 21 trail construction and maintenance projects across the state.

The grants are supported through the National Recreational Trails Fund. The money has to be used for a diverse mix of both motorized and non-motorized trail projects.
