Notes from Texas Tech Athletics:

Each of Texas Tech’s eight wins this season have come by at least 20 points as the Red Raiders are now outscoring opponents by plus-30.3 points per game. Texas Tech is the only team in the country with eight wins by at least 20 points this season. In fact, entering today, the only two teams in the country with six or more wins by that margin was Utah (plays tonight) and Memphis (won by 20-plus points Friday night). Texas Tech boasts one of the nation’s top defenses as the Red Raiders are giving up only 13.2 points per game this season. The Red Raiders came into today’s game as the Big 12 leader and ranked fourth in the FBS for scoring defense. Likewise, Texas Tech hit its average of 43.6 points per game today as the Red Raiders have scored 40-plus points in six or nine games this season. Texas Tech ranked fourth in the FBS for scoring offense entering this weekend. Texas Tech created five takeaways in its win over Kansas State, pushing its season total to 20 through nine games. It marked the most takeaways by the Red Raider defense since Texas Tech had the same total in a win over Ole Miss in the 2022 TaxAct Texas Bowl. Behren Morton returned at quarterback following a two-game absence as Texas Tech improved to 19-4 in games he has started and has not departed due to injury since the start of the 2023 season. Texas Tech’s lone loss of the season came during the two-game stretch Morton was out at Arizona State. Texas Tech has now won its last nine games Morton has started dating back to the 2024 regular season. Texas Tech has arguably the nation’s top defensive player in linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who impressed again with five tackles (1.0 tackle for loss), a pass breakup and two crucial forced fumbles. Rodriguez entered the weekend as the FBS leader with five forced fumbles this season before pushing that total to seven with both knockouts being recovered by the Red Raiders. He entered this weekend ranked second nationally among all defensive players and first among linebackers with a 92.3 overall grade by Pro Football Focus. David Bailey now has an FBS-leading 11.5 sacks this season after getting to the quarterback once against the Wildcats. CFP Rankings

The first College Football Playoff rankings will be released Tuesday evening. The ESPN program announcing the rankings begins at 7 p.m. CT.

Texas Tech returns home for an 11 a.m. Saturday kickoff against BYU. The game will be broadcast on ABC. Currently ABC, ESPN and other Disney channels are not seen on YouTube TV because of a disagreement between Disney/the ABC network and YouTube TV. The standoff removes ABC affiliates from the pay TV service but affiliates and its owners are not involved in the negotiations.

ESPN’s College GameDay network pregame show will broadcast from the Tech campus Saturday, the second straight week to be at a Big 12 school. It was in Salt Lake City yesterday. Last night the Utah Utes defeated Cincinnati 45-14.

“Lubbock’s going to be jumping for sure. I know this is a big thing for Texas Tech, it’s been some time since they’ve come to Lubbock, so I’m excited about it,” said quarterback Behren Morton moments after GameDay was announced.

The program featured Coach Bob Knight as a guest game picker for its previous broadcast from Lubbock, Nov. 1, 2008.
