This urban oasis offers a retreat from city life that is hard to find anywhere else in Dallas. Its appeal has helped develop surrounding neighborhoods like Lakewood and Lake Highlands over time.

A brief history
The area where White Rock Lake sits today was originally a tree-lined valley where settlements emerged in the 1840s, according to non-profit For the Love Of The Lake. One early community was Little Egypt, a freedmen’s town that was developed just north of the lake after the Civil War, according to the Texas State Historical Association.
After the turn of the century, Dallas’ explosive growth led to a water shortage and eventually spurred the creation of White Rock Lake. The land was purchased in 1910, with a dam and spillway completed a year later, according to the White Rock Lake Conservancy. Following the lake’s completion, residential construction increased nearby, according to TSHA.
By the early 1930s, the Dallas Park Board began to develop the lakeshore into a municipal park. Nearby Lake Highlands was mostly cotton fields and farm houses connected by dirt roads until after World War II, according to the Lake Highlands Advocate. Residential development reportedly grew as people moved to the area after the war.

Today, northeastern Dallas is home to some of the city’s most sought-after neighborhoods, in part because of its proximity to White Rock Lake.

Notable landmarks
White Rock Lake: Arguably the defining feature of eastern Dallas. You can’t swim here, but there’s no shortage of things to do across more than 1,000 acres of park land.

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden: Located on the south shore of the lake, the Arboretum and Garden opened in 1984. It now hosts a bevy of events and classes on its 66 acres.
Keller’s Drive-In on Northwest Highway in Dallas has changed very little in its 75-plus years. That’s a good thing.
