SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs couldn’t quite pull it off Wednesday night in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, but that didn’t stop fans from cheering them on until the end.
In San Antonio, it was easy to feel the energy of the fans, with the entire city buzzing with excitement. From the Frost Bank Center to watch parties all across the city, tens of thousands of fans are betting that the San Antonio Spurs will once again be NBA champions.
Fans all the way from France traveled to the Alamo City to cheer on the Spurs for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
“I think many French people love the Spurs because of Tony Parker, Ginóbili,” said a French tourist who was visiting the Alamo ahead of the game.
The Frenchmen showed their allegiance with some permanent artwork — a full sleeve of Spurs-related tattoos — and some major confidence ahead of making the journey to the United States.
“The 19th of May, I sent a text to my contact at the Spurs and I said, ‘I want to buy the tickets for the NBA finals after only 1-0 in OKC,” he said confident that the Spurs would beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.
It’s not just the crowds of Spurs fans near the Alamo. Over at one of the many watch parties across the city, The Rock at La Cantera reached maximum capacity with 6,000 Spurs fans all cheering on their favorite players.
“Spurs are where it’s at,” one fan cheered.
Young and old, all with the same goal: to watch the Spurs beat the New York Knicks in the first game of the series.
“Go Spurs Go!” exclaimed one fan.
Although the Spurs didn’t come out with a victory, there’s still another chance when they take on the Knicks in Game 2 on Friday in San Antonio, and you can bet fans near and far will be cheering them on.
