El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees members Valerie Beals and Daniel Call have resigned from the district’s school board, leaving a vacancy in District 6, which includes the Westside.
In a statement to KFOX14/CBS4, the district confirmed Beals’ resignation, stating that her resignation is effective June 6.
While the district has not provided a reason for her resignation, Beals’ term, which began in June 2023, had been set to run through May 2027.
Additionally, in a statement to KFOX14/CBS4, Call confirmed he is resigning.
District 6 covers several schools, including Brown Middle School, Franklin High School, Guerrero Elementary School, Herrera Elementary School, Hornedo Middle School, Kohlberg Elementary School, Lundy Elementary School, Polk Elementary School, Tippin Elementary School
Meanwhile, Beals ‘ resignation comes amid the district’s financial struggles as EPISD declared financial exigency yesterday, allowing for termination of contracts, employment agreements and programs without penalties.
The financial exigency declaration was voted on 5-1 at a special board meeting held on Thursday, in which Beals was not present.
The vote comes as district leaders have been working to balance the district’s budget by the end of June, as the district is projecting a shortfall of roughly $42.1 million for the 2026-2027 budget year.
