ROUND ROCK — For six innings, pitcher Coll Carroll did everything he could to bring another state championship to Calallen.

But a seventh-inning error, a game-tying sacrifice fly and a passed ball proved to be the difference as Texarkana Pleasant Grove rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats in the UIL Class 4A Division I state championship game on Friday, June 5, at Dell Diamond.

Carroll came up clutch when it mattered throughout the game, working out of multiple jams to keep the Hawks scoreless.

The Texas State commit even escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam early in the game and carried a 1-0 lead into the final inning.

Carroll allowed two hits and finished with 11 strikeouts in 6⅓ innings of work in his final high school game.

“I’m glad I was able to do it this with this team,” Carroll said about getting back to the state championship game. “We came together, and it was amazing — this journey with them.”

Due to inclement weather in the Round Rock area, the start of Calallen’s game against Pleasant Grove was delayed until 10 a.m. and again until 11 a.m. with rainfall in the second inning.

After the second delay, Calallen scratched across its lone run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Aidan Flores and appeared poised to capture a second consecutive state title.

Pleasant Grove capitalized on a seventh-inning miscue to put the tying run in scoring position. The Hawks evened the score on a sacrifice fly before a passed ball brought home the winning run to end the Wildcats’ bid for a repeat.

The loss snapped Calallen’s hopes of securing the program’s fifth state championship in program history. The Wildcats suffer their first loss since Feb. 27 and conclude the season with a 38-3 record.

“Coll pitched a heck of a ball game,” Calallen coach Steve Chapman said. “He walked the leadoff hitter and that puts pressure on your defense. But that’s how baseball goes, and that’s why you have to play 21 outs.

“This was a special senior group and they’re everything a coach dreams of having. Their work ethic is unmatched and they’re a great group of kids on top of that.”
