A Dallas neighborhood is worried for two residents who were critically injured in a house fire Thursday night that also killed three dogs.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the fire in the 6600 block of Starkey Street at about 9:26 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions at the front of a one-story home.
After receiving reports that two people were possibly trapped inside, firefighters entered the home in rescue mode and pulled both occupants to safety. The two were taken to local hospitals in critical condition, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.
Neighbors identified the residents as an elderly brother and sister who had lived in the home for years.
“Everybody knows them around the neighborhood,” said neighbor Andrew Trevino. He says they often ride around the neighborhood on their motorized scooters. Trevino says they enjoy spending time together on their front porch.
Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour before declaring the fire extinguished at 10:24 p.m. The cause remains under investigation.
Beyond concerns for the injured residents, neighbors have also been mourning the loss of three dogs that died in the fire.
“That broke my heart,” Trevino said.
Trevino said he has struggled to shake the images of the deceased dogs. He saw them after helping a surviving dog off the property.
“You lose your dogs. Your house,” he said. As the investigation continues, Trevino said his focus remains on the people who called the house home.
“We’re just going to pray that they are okay and that they make it out of this,” he said.
