Sponsored by The Medallion, “Living Life While Managing Diabetes” is a free biweekly program

The Medallion Jewish Assisted Living Residence invites the community to attend “Living Life While Managing Diabetes,” a biweekly support group focused on diabetes education, healthy living and meaningful conversation. Meetings are held on Mondays at 7 p.m. The first took place June 1.

Held every other Monday, the program will feature wellness education sessions and supportive discussions designed to help individuals better understand and manage diabetes. Houston Diabetes Peer Support Network Program founder Serena Valentine, executive director of the CORE Initiative, will share her expertise and personal journey about living with diabetes.

During the session, Valentine will provide basic information about diabetes, key strategies for effective diabetes management and the services offered through the Houston Diabetes Peer Support Program.

Valentine has lived with Type 2 diabetes for 22 years. Originally misdiagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, she experienced years of unnecessary treatments, emergency room visits and medical complications before receiving the correct diagnosis. Through her experience, she developed a passion for educating others about diabetes and raising awareness throughout the community.

“I had the passion to educate our community about an illness that is so widely spread and becoming more and more common every day,” Valentine said. “It’s because of what people do not know – even after being diagnosed. People still don’t quite understand.”

The programs are free and open to the public. Family members and friends are encouraged to attend.
