I had never tried avocado ice cream before venturing into Salty & Sweet, a fun, old-fashioned ice cream store and candy shop on Main Street in Boerne. If you are part of the regular Whole Foods–Trader Joe’s crowd, you might be familiar with avocado ice cream, but I prefer the basics: vanilla and chocolate, and occasionally strawberry if I’m feeling adventurous.
But at the vintage-looking Salty & Sweet, avocado ice cream is the house specialty. It’s one of seven classic flavors kept on deck year-round, alongside 20 seasonal favorites that rotate in and out every so often.
The unique ice cream flavor has become an exciting fixture on Boerne’s picturesque Hill Country Mile — part of the charming local texture that makes the “underrated” small town a hidden gem that more people in San Antonio and beyond are relocating to.
On a recent visit, I spoke with Pat Cleary, who co-owns the nostalgic candy spot with his wife, Christina and their daughters. He told me they opened in 2019 and have been passionate about serving natural, preservative-free, homemade ice cream ever since.
So, I ordered the signature sweet treat to see what all the hype was about.
The ice cream is a pretty, light green color, with a similar look to mint chocolate chip or pistachio, without the nuts or the chocolate chunks. It smelled like sweet vanilla with a faintly grassy note.
On my first bite — yes, BITE — the ice cream tasted super creamy and buttery, with a slightly nutty undertone. It was sweet, but not too overwhelming. I liked the ice cream. My favorite part was how creamy it was, even though it wasn’t that heavy. The waffle cone was also crunchy.
Outside of the ice cream, walking through the store is its own treat. Retro candies, gourmet popcorn, and jelly bean dispensers line the building’s walls. Located in Boerne’s historic district, the store carries an extra special nostalgia, with baked goods, antique sodas, a couple arcade games and Pennsylvania soft pretzels that build onto that mystique, making it one of my favorite stops in Boerne.
I ordered a small avocado ice cream (though it was roughly two luscious, extra creamy scoops, basically a medium) with a waffle cone, which cost $5.40, and a small waffle cone for $2.35. I also bought a fresh pretzel for $5.45. With tax, my total was $14.29.
