Texas A&M’s Historic Academic Building, nearing beginning of restoration

  • June 6, 2026

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – One of Texas A&M’s most recognizable landmarks is about to get a major facelift.

The University’s academic building, with its iconic copper dome visible from across campus, is heading into a $30 million restoration.

The Board of Regents approved the project last month.

After more than 100 years, and no major exterior work since the 1980s, the building is showing its age.

“We think about the brick and the stone and the copper on it. The very iconic shape. But they do weather out eventually, and so the building over time has started to weather and some of the stone and some of the masonry on it has started to crack,” said Brett McCully, Texas A&M’s Chief Facilities Officer.

Starting at the end of the month, crews will repair and restore the exterior masonry and brick, rebuild the roof, and restore that signature copper dome.

The project is expected to take about 3 years.

“We are looking forward to turning something back and giving it another 100 years,” said McCully.

There is one notable move inside — the Liberty Bell will be temporarily relocated to Cushing Library during construction, then returned when the work is done.

For the University Architect, this is about more than bricks and mortar.

“Part of who we are is our past, our history, and our tradition, not just how we move forward. We still have to maintain who we are as Aggies,” said Lilia Gonzales, the Texas A&M University Architect.

Once the exterior work wraps up, the University will turn its attention to the interior, assessing what restorations may be needed there as well.

“Make sure that this building can live for many years and many generations to come,” said Gonzales.

The funding for the project is a part of the Permanent University Fund and the Excellence Initiatives.
