McKINNEY, Texas (CBS Newspath) – A 19-year-old is on trial in Collin County, accused of fatally stabbing a competitor at a Frisco-area high school track meet last year—an incident that has drawn national attention and racially charged reactions on both sides.
Karmelo Anthony faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.
Prosecutors say the two teens, who attended different schools and did not know each other, argued after Anthony sat under a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team.
According to the defense, Metcalf asked Anthony to move and Anthony responded, “Touch me and see what happens.”
Defense attorneys say Metcalf then grabbed Anthony, and that Anthony reacted in a split-second act of self-defense. Prosecutors allege Anthony pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf in the chest.
On the second day of testimony, Collin County District Attorney Bill Wirskye played body camera video of a Frisco police school resource officer arresting Anthony. In the video, Anthony tells the officer, “I’m not alleged, I did it,” adding, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to,” according to the prosecution.
Outside the courthouse in McKinney on Tuesday, a small group of Anthony supporters gathered, a calmer scene than the day before when demonstrators on both sides shouted heated words as the trial began.
The trial is also raising questions about the makeup of the jury. No Black jurors were seated on the 12-person panel. Prosecutors say the selection process was race-neutral and that the remaining three Black candidates were struck because they were educators.
Brooklyn Law School professor Alexis Hoag-Fordjour said challenges to jury selection can resurface later in a case. “I would expect them to raise it again, depending on what the verdict is,” Hoag-Fordjour said, adding that it could be an issue raised during the direct appeal process.
