Not surprisingly, pitcher Cambria Salmon became the second Texas softball player to enter the NCAA transfer portal Monday, per multiple reports.
Salmon joins classmate Shylien Brister in the portal, which means the only two members of the Longhorns’ 2024 recruiting class are both leaving the program after their sophomore seasons. Schools can start signing players from the portal on Monday.
Salmon fell out of the pitching rotation this season for Texas, which wrapped up a second consecutive national championship Thursday with a 4-1 win over Texas Tech in Oklahoma City. As a freshman in 2025, the Southern California native made 22 appearances for the Longhorns and went 7-2 with a 2.48 ERA in 62 innings. This season, she had a 5-0 record and a 2.12 ERA in just 39⅔ innings. Salmon did not throw in the Austin Super Regionals or the Women’s College World Series after falling behind freshman Hannah Wells in the rotation.
Pitching looks like a concern for head coach Mike White and the Longhorns next season. Ace Teagan Kavan, a two-time Most Outstanding Player at the WCWS, is expected to return for her senior season in 2027, but Texas lacks depth. Citlaly Gutierrez ran out of eligibility this season, which means Wells (3.07 ERA, 6-3 record, 45⅔ innings) and rising junior Brenlee Gonzalez (3.10, 2-0, 20⅓ innings) are the only other pitchers on the roster with experience.
Sophia Bordi, a transfer from Oklahoma, will be eligible in 2027 after having to sit out this past season. The Longhorns also welcome in a 2026 recruiting class that includes Madi Doty, a 6-foot right-hander with youth national team experience who’s ranked as the No. 2 pitcher prospect in the nation for her class by Softball America.
