It’s a sentence of more than five years in federal prison for a native of Iraq who lived in the Sugar Land area, convicted of violating gun export laws.
It took a Harris County jury only a couple of hours to bring a guilty verdict on one count of conspiracy to violate export control laws against the accused, Hassan Al Gharawi, who’s been living in the Houston area.
The 54-year-old was convicted in October of last year and was sentenced on Monday to 63 months in prison and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine after prosecutors said he stockpiled, concealed and transported firearms in vehicle parts headed for Iraq.
Acting U.S. Attorney John G.E. Marck saidd Gharawi received 77 firearms and kept them at his home before moving them to a storage space.
Marck said the FBI will keep custody of Gharawi until he is turned over to the Federal Bureau of Prisons soon.
