We are just days away from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and fans are counting down the hours until kickoff. Teams around the world are getting in the last few friendlies and trainings before the games begin on Thursday.
With both Arlington and Houston hosting games, Texas cities are expecting fans and visitors from all over the world. Four World Cup teams are calling Texas home during the cup: Sweden, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Czechia and Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is based out of Austin’s Q2 Stadium. Even though there won’t be any matches in Austin, the anticipation for the cup to start is felt throughout the city. Jack and Ginger’s Irish Pub is covered in flags ahead of the first match this week. General manager Robert Vandelden said the pub has already seen fans turn out.
“There’s been a lot of international friendlies, and each one of those, we’ve had a group of people here,” Vandelden said.
He also explained that previous years have brought loads of fans, and he expects another huge turnout this year.
“We’re trying to do as much as possible to be something for everybody,” said Vandelden. “We are adding certain kind of types of drinks, like beers and different mixed drinks that come from different regions around the world.”
City health departments are boosting health and safety education, especially to those who aren’t familiar with the Texas heat and humidity. Chris Crookham with Austin Public Health said the organization is “reminding people to drink water, take breaks and stay in the shade.”
Crookham said the department feels prepared for the influx of visitors. The city announced in a memo that it will also increase its Infectious Disease Surveillance, Extreme Heat Preparedness and coordinate with partners to implement public health readiness.
