LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock Health Department is warning of West Nile virus detection in the area.
The Biological Threat Research Lab at Texas Tech notified the health department that some mosquitoes have tested positive.
The virus is picked up by mosquitoes from infected birds and then transmitted to humans through bites.
People 50 and older or those with health issues are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill.
Everyone is encouraged to take steps to reduce bites, including wearing repellent, covering up, limiting outdoor time during dawn and dusk, and getting rid of standing water around homes.
