AUSTIN, Texas (KETK)— Travel Texas in the Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office of the Governor has recognized the City of Athens for earning the Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community distinction Tuesday morning.

Earning the certification highlights Athens’ commitment as a community to continue to grow tourism, boost economic growth, increase local job opportunities and captivate more travelers to visit the expanding city.

“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies,” Gov. Greg Abbott said. “Travelers to and within Texas generate more than $200 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state. Every region of this great state offers endless opportunities to experience the natural beauty, rich history, and true Texas hospitality that draws visitors to our communities. I congratulate the City of Athens and Visit Athens on earning this designation. All Texas communities are encouraged to apply to become a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community to further grow local tourism and jobs across our great state.”

The office says that the benefits of the designation for cities seeking certification include the opportunity to strengthen or establish relationships important for tourism development and educates local leaders on the importance of tourism to the state. Cities can also learn more about opportunities provided by Travel Texas and other state government programs available to support communities and the travel and tourism industry.

“Athens has a story worth telling — from our historic courthouse square and thriving arts scene to the East Texas charm that sets us apart,” Representative Keith Bell said. “This recognition is a credit to the city, Visit Athens, our local businesses, and the people who make Athens a place families want to visit. It’s a chance to grow our economy, create new opportunity and welcome more fellow Texans to experience what makes this community special.”

Offices within state government like Travel Texas in the Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office aim to increase local economic development by marketing Texas as an ideal travel destination, which encourages out-of-state travel to Texas and creates revenue and jobs for local communities.
