AUSTIN, Texas — It’s official: the World Cup has started, and fans all over are tuning in for the event.
One of the biggest watch parties in Austin is organized by Austin FC. The senior vice president of marketing at Austin FC, Ryan Madden, says the turnout speaks to the community’s love for the sport.
“It’s a real testament to the community,” Madden said. “And it’s passion for soccer.”
Organizers said Thursday’s watch party brought 5,000 people to Auditorium Shores. Fans say that watch parties like this are a more accessible way for fans to be a part of the World Cup atmosphere without stadium tickets.
After Friday’s match, Austin FC’s watch party will move to Inn Cahoots from June 13 to July 19. Outside of the capital city, Dallas and Houston both have a variety of watch parties and tournament events, including the FIFA Fan Festival.
