As Thursday wound down, a line formed outside Tre Stelle Coffee Co. in Far North Dallas. It may have been late for coffee, but they were here for something else. (Hint: Think the color green.)
It was the start of Yelp’s first Hot Matcha Summer in Dallas, a series that began last year in San Antonio and features matcha-themed events at local businesses until early July.
The kickoff, hosted in partnership with the Dallas Matcha Club, welcomed 75 matcha lovers on the guest list, with over 150 more on the waitlist, said Semhar Merkey, community manager at Yelp Dallas.

Tre Stelle, whose name pays tribute to a coffee shop in Eritrea, where founder and owner Jonathan Ghebreamlak’s parents are from, hosted an excited crowd of mostly twentysomethings.
They chatted, made beaded bracelets and colored printouts of Dallas Matcha Club and Hot Matcha Summer drawings while drinking mango sticky rice matcha with a choice of milk or banana milk matcha.

Part of Tre Stelle’s recently launched summer menu, the mango sticky rice matcha uses cream of coconut, sweet condensed milk and mango puree, said Ghebreamlak. The banana milk matcha, a new product for the shop, uses the local milk brand Mooala.
Additionally, Sweet Tooth Society, another North Texas business, provided matcha blondies for the crowd to munch on.

“I’m really happy that there are more matcha events popping up that matcha lovers like me and my friends can go and check out,” said Truc Bui, 22, a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas. She loves the grassy taste of matcha and finds the earthiness goes well with other flavors.
This was the first Dallas Matcha Club event for Katie Nguyen, 21, a recent University of Texas at Arlington grad who became friends with Bui while both worked at a matcha cafe last year. “I like the sense of community, and we are all kind of talking to each other in line,” she said.

Matcha is a milled green tea with roots in ancient China and Japan that has been trending in the United States. The drink typically has less caffeine than coffee and contains antioxidants such as polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory effects.
Its global market size reached $4.17 billion in 2025 and will reach $7.15 billion in 2030, according to The Business Research Company, a market research company.

Matcha sales at Tre Stelle have quadrupled since the shop opened in 2022, and it now sells 50 to 75 cups of matcha a day on weekends, Ghebreamlak said. Andy Tran, an event attendee who runs a Garland-based matcha pop-up called Hanamo Home Cafe, said his business took off two months after it opened in June 2025.

When Aaliyah Iwamoto moved to Dallas in 2024, she founded the Dallas Matcha Club to meet new people through something she loved. It now has almost 7,000 followers on Instagram. She couldn’t find many cafes specializing in matcha back in 2024, but now pop-ups and events are everywhere.
“It just boomed and I’m so surprised,” Iwamoto said. “It’s cool to see Yelp … recognizing the matcha community in Dallas.”
The event series is a way for Yelp to connect with new audiences, especially Gen Z, for Yelp Elite, a program for loyal Yelpers who can access exclusive events, said Merkey, the Yelp Dallas community manager.

“I love matcha,” she said. “So I figured why not get in touch with a community that already loves that.”
