The shooting in Midland, Texas, left one dead and 10 others injured.
MIDLAND, Texas — Authorities have identified the victim in Friday’s mass shooting in West Texas.
The City of Midland issued a statement on Friday identifying Ed Scott as the victim who was killed. The city said Scott, who was a city employee, was “involved in the community, specifically working as an integral figure with local and regional softball organizations.”

“While many details will be discussed in the days ahead, we want to pause and recognize what matters most right now. A member of the City of Midland family will not be coming home,” city officials said in a statement.
“Behind every employee badge is a husband or wife, a mother or father, a son or daughter, a friend, a teammate, and a person whose life touched countless others. Today, a family is experiencing a loss that words cannot adequately describe, and our hearts are with them,” officials added.
Scott’s family asked for privacy.
At least 10 others were injured in Friday’s attack.
Police said 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal opened fire on bystanders and police. Villareal, who died after a standoff with Midland police officers, had been wanted after shooting at an officer just days earlier.
Police have provided limited details about how the shooting unfolded. Police arrived in the area after receiving reports of an active shooter, and Mata Villarreal started firing at officers, said Midland Police Chief Greg Snow. Several officers were pinned down behind their patrol cars and had to be rescued by an armored vehicle, Snow said, but no officers were shot.
A witness at the collision center said he saw an 18-wheeler in the middle of the road and thought it was a crash. That’s when he said he heard the shots ring out and authorities told them to take cover.
Mata Villarreal, of nearby Odessa, was wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after firing multiple times at a Midland police officer on Wednesday, the state’s public safety agency said.
Midland Memorial Hospital said four people who were brought there underwent surgery and that five had been treated and released.
