In the aftermath of the San Antonio Spurs’ historically devastating Game 4 loss to the New York Knicks, many fans were quick to assign blame for the team’s collapse after building a commanding first-half lead.
Much of that criticism was directed at starting point guard De’Aaron Fox, whose costly decision in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter gave the Knicks an opportunity to deliver the game-winning basket.
They took their anger to social media where they demanded the Spurs trade Fox after this season. Some fans even started GoFundMe campaigns (and at least one fake campaign) to raise money to buy out Fox’s contract with the Spurs.
MySA contacted GoFundMe on Thursday, June 11 to inquire about the platform’s policy on joke fundraisers like the ones featuring Fox. A spokesperson responded with the following statement:
“GoFundMe is monitoring related fundraiser starts and will remove any that have not been authorized by the recipient of the funds.”
As of press time, the four GoFundMe campaigns, which hadn’t raised any money, were no longer accessible on the site. However, a new fundraiser had emerged from a user named “Tk Thegoat,” who listed North Carolina as his home state. Rather than seeking donations to buy out Fox’s contract, however, the campaign asked contributors to help cover the “emotional damage” the Spurs guard allegedly caused.
Last summer, Fox reportedly signed a four-year, $229 million extension with the Spurs that will keep him in San Antonio through the 2029-30 season. He is currently averaging 16 points, four rebounds and six assists per game this postseason.
