While making its first College World Series appearance since 2022, Texas slipped into a 4-0 hole during a first inning that featured a two-run homer from Rylan Lujo and two costly errors by catcher Carson Tinney. Following that bad beginning, the Longhorns never got any closer than three runs for the rest of the game.
Offensively, Texas was unable to get anything going against Georgia starting pitcher Joey Volchko. While completing his first complete game of the year, Volchko struck out a career-high 15 batters while allowing four hits and one ninth-inning walk. A throwing error by the junior right-hander led to the only run that Texas scored on Saturday night.

Volchko was opposed on the mound by UT sophomore Dylan Volantis, who kept Georgia off the scoreboard in the five innings following the first frame. The Bulldogs, however, scored three times in the seventh session, and Volantis was pulled after an 111-pitch outing in which he allowed four hits, hit four batters and registered nine strikeouts.
Georgia scored seven times against Volantis, but just two of those runs were earned as Tinney’s miscues and a seventh-inning error by UT third baseman Casey Borba did not help matters. Volantis also struggled against Lujo, who added an RBI double to his highlight reel in the seventh inning.
Texas will return to Charles Schwab Field at 1 p.m. on Monday. During the regular season, the Longhorns won two of the three games that it played against Alabama in Austin.

Down to its last three outs, Texas is set to send Aiden Robbins, Carson Tinney and Anthony Pack Jr. to the plate in the ninth inning. The top three batters in the Texas lineup, Robbins, Tinney and Pack are 0-for-9 tonight with five strikeouts.

Georgia will send Joey Volchko back out to the mound for the ninth inning. No Bulldog pitcher has thrown a nine-inning complete game this season.
A bad night just got worse for Texas in the eighth inning. After UT designated hitter Ethan Mendoza led off the inning with a single, he was removed from the game with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.
Mendoza opened this season as the Longhorns’ starting second baseman. But he has been limited to just hitting duties since he injured his shoulder while diving for a baseball during a game at Tennessee on May 8.

Georgia has blown this game open behind run-scoring hits in the seventh inning by Rylan Lujo and Kenny Ishikawa. All three of Georgia’s runs were credited as unearned due to an inning-opening error by UT third baseman Casey Borba. Just two of the seven runs scored against Texas starting pitcher Dylan Volantis were credited as earned.
Volantis’ night ended with one out in the seventh inning. While throwing 111 pitches tonight, Volantis allowed just four hits but he also hit four batters and issued a walk.

Georgia starting pitcher Joey Volchko is now at 11 strikeouts on the night. Texas cleanup hitter Temo Becerra has been responsible for three of those strikeouts. Volchko and Becerra were teammates at Stanford from 2024-25.
Through six innings, both pitchers have posted impressive stats. Georgia’s Joey Volchko has allowed three hits, no walks and one unearned run while striking out 10 batters. Texas star Dylan Volantis has only allowed two hits and two earned runs while striking out eight Bulldogs, but he has also hit four batters and issued one walk.

Volchko has thrown just 71 pitches. Due to a 41-pitch first inning, Volantis’ pitch count is currently at 97.
After pushing across four runs in the first inning, Georgia has cooled off offensively. The Bulldogs have not gotten a hit since the opening frame, and Texas has actually out-hit Georgia tonight by a 3-2 margin.
After Adrian Rodriguez led off the inning with a single and then moved over to third base on an errant pickoff throw, Ethan Mendoza brought in UT’s first run with an RBI single. The Longhorns’ half of the inning, however, ended with Georgia pitcher Joey Volchko’s 10th strikeout.

For the second time tonight, Joey Volchko struck out the side. In the first inning, Joey Volchko struck out the first three batters in the Texas lineup. In the fourth frame, he retired UT’s No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 hitters. Volchko now has nine strikeouts on the night, and he is closing in on the season-high total of 10 strikeouts that he recorded against Ole Miss on April 25 and against LIU on May 29.
During both of his strikeout stretches, Volchko retired Texas outfielder Anthony Pack Jr. One of the nation’s top freshmen, Pack entered today with more walks (45) than strikeouts (36) on the season.

Texas starting pitcher Dylan Volantis hit the second batter he faced in the third inning, but that was the only traffic that Texas saw on the basepaths. Volantis had hit just seven batters over his first 88 ⅔ innings this season, but he has plunked three Bulldogs tonight.
Meanwhile, Texas is still struggling to get anything going against Joey Volchko. The Longhorns have already struck out six times.
After a rough first inning, Dylan Volantis retired the Bulldogs in order during the second session. So far tonight, Volantis has twice retired Golden Spikes Award front-runner Daniel Jackson.

In the second inning’s top half, Texas got Adrian Rodriguez to second base on a single and a stolen base. But Rodriguez was stranded there when Ethen Mendoza struck out on a pitch-clock violation and Georgia pitcher Joey Volchko snagged a ball that Ashton Larson hit right back at him.
While Texas stumbled in the first inning, Georgia took advantage of a few missteps by the Longhorns and one big swing from Rylan Lujo. That big swing helped Georgia strike first as a ball hit by Lujo off the foul pole was ruled to be a two-run homer after a video review.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Georgia scored twice when Kolby Branch struck out on a wild pitch and Texas catcher Carson Tinney threw wide of first base. One of those runners who scored on that play was Mike O’Shaughnessy, the Georgia designated hitter who had originally gotten to first base when he struck out and Tinney airmailed a throw to first base. Tinney was credited with two errors in the inning.
A finalist for the Buster Posey Award, Tinney has committed just two errors over the first 58 games of UT’s season. He had posted a .997 fielding percentage.
After a 45-minute weather delay, we are underway at Charles Schwab Field. In the top of the first inning, Georgia pitcher Joey Volchko struck out the side as Aiden Robbins, Carson Tinney and Anthony Pack Jr. were retired in order.
