Everything is bigger in Texas — and Lone Star companies might just be better, too.
Global business magazine Fortune unveiled its roundup of the 500 most successful U.S. businesses for 2026, a profits-driven ranking centered around the biggest and strongest U.S. companies by revenue. The 500 companies comprise a combined revenue of $21 trillion and a workforce employing to more than 30.5 million people around the globe, with Texas leading the pack as the state home to the most dominant companies.
Texas bested its West Coast rival, California, to claim the largest number of Fortune 500 companies in 2026, with 57 calling the Lone Star State home. Here in the Austin metro area, the Texas capital touted three top finishers, represented by Dell Technologies at No. 31, Tesla at No. 43 and Oracle at No. 82.
Looking at Texas as a whole, the state claimed two Top 10 ranks among the Fortune 500 roundup, courtesy Irving’s McKesson (No. 8) and Exxon Mobil in Spring (No. 9). Other company standouts included Chevron in Houston (No. 21); AT&T in Dallas (No. 35); Valero Energy and United Services Automobile Association in San Antonio (No. 40 and No. 93, respectively); American Airlines Group in Fort Worth (No. 86); Southwest Airlines in Dallas (No. 163); and NRG Energy (No. 149).
As for the top honors? While those didn’t belong to Texas, it’s a company that Texans are no stranger to. For the first time in more than a decade, Amazon beat out Walmart to snag the No. 1 spot.
