WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding in the Waco area Sunday night.
The KWTX First Alert Weather Team reports central and southern McLennan County experienced the highest rainfall totals, likely ranging between three and five inches.
I-35 in Waco was shut down in both directions due to flooding at Church Camp Lane. Late at night, traffic on the northbound lanes appeared to be moving but the southbound lanes remained closed.

In Hewitt, the stormwater flooded streets and parking lots along Hewitt Drive.
“Due to ongoing heavy rainfall and rapidly deteriorating road conditions, the Hewitt Police Department is urging residents to STAY HOME and avoid travel. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN,” the Hewitt Police Department wrote in a social media post.
Drivers are reminded to never drive through flooded roadways. It is impossible to know the depth of the water or the condition of the roadway beneath it. Just a small amount of moving water can carry away a vehicle.
Hewitt police said its officers are actively monitoring conditions and responding to weather-related incidents throughout the city. We will continue to provide updates as conditions change.
