Motorists traveling between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi should expect delays over the next two weeks as lane closures are scheduled at the western end of the JFK Causeway.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), daytime single-lane and shoulder closures are planned on the West Laguna Madre Bridge on Park Road 22 beginning today (Monday, June 15), and continuing through the end of the month as part of an ongoing bridge maintenance project.
The work will take place weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No weekend closures are currently scheduled.
The West Laguna Madre Bridge is located where Park Road 22 leaves the mainland in Flour Bluff and begins crossing toward Mustang Island.
Construction will begin with the closure of the westbound inside (left) lane and shoulder on the bridge. As work progresses, crews will shift operations, reopening the inside lane and closing the outside lane and shoulder.
Once the westbound work is completed, the contractor will move to the eastbound bridge, where the outside (right) lane and shoulder will be closed.
TxDOT officials said the work will be limited to the bridge area and will not affect other lanes on the JFK Causeway.
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed while traveling through the work zone and remain alert for workers and equipment.
Officials noted that lane closures are subject to change without notice and that all work is weather permitting.
