A citizens committee advising the El Paso Independent School District is recommending a bond package totaling just over $1 billion, a proposal that could go before voters in November if trustees decide later this summer to call a bond election.
EPISD said its Citizens Bond Committee is made up of parents, community members and local professionals.
The group has been reviewing district needs and is recommending a bond package split into three parts.
Proposition A, the largest portion, is about $965.8 million.
Proposition B is about $10.6 million, and Proposition C is about $25.6 million.
RECOMMENDED: Nearly 250 jobs set to be cut at El Paso ISD amid ongoing funding issues
Together, the three propositions total just over $1 billion.
The recommendation includes more than $469 million for districtwide renovations, aimed at aging buildings and major repairs across EPISD.
It also includes about $94 million for evaporative cooling systems and about $76 million for technology.
Another $24 million is recommended for safety and security upgrades, and about $171 million would go toward athletic updates across the district.
The recommendation comes as EPISD is also dealing with financial exigency and recent job cuts.
The next step is whether trustees will move forward with calling a bond election later this summer.
If trustees call an election and voters approve the bond, it would come about 10 years after EPISD voters approved the district’s last bond, a roughly $668 million package in 2016.
