Two years after Bengali community theater group RongoMoncho introduced Shakuntala to the North Texas stage, the group will present another production, Humayun Ahmed’s Jinn Kafil, on June 20 and 21 at the Dallas Children’s Theater.
“This time we have selected Humayun Ahmed, who is the most popular storyteller in recent Bengali literature,” said Manzur Choudhury, who will be playing the lead in Jinn Kafil and also adapted the novel for the stage.
Jinn Kafil is a psychological mystery from the Misir Ali series about a parapsychologist who solves mysteries.
Choudhury says the show is similar to Sherlock Holmes but is a paranormal story with a very logical explanation at the end. The theater group has spent 10 months preparing for the show, and this will be the first time this story will be performed on stage.
“Misir Ali is a very tough character to play, and the story is also very tough to play on stage as well,” Choudhury said.
The production will be performed in Bengali, but the group will provide a synopsis of the play in English for English speakers interested in seeing the play.
“The Bangladeshi community is growing here, and we are trying our best to hold our culture, and we want people to see what Bangladeshi theater can do,” Choudhury said.
